This course is designed to ensure you obtain a sound knowledge of optical manufacturing techniques, developing the necessary skills to fully understand the subject The course is ideally suited to those working in a manufacturing laboratory or in a practice and who wish to obtain a nationally accredited qualification. One successful completion of this qualification you will be entitled to show SMC(Tech) as your post nominal. This Level 4 course teaches you the fundamental essential skills in both a flexible and affordable way.
The Level 4 Diploma for Optical Technicians is a qualification to help students develop essential skills. Once completed you will have developed an understanding of optical manufacturing practices and techniques.
Each year of this two-year course lasts around 9 months and you will need to allow 4 to 5 hours a week for study.
In order to be successfully achieve the Level 4 Diploma for Optical Technicians, you will need to complete both years of the course and pass the examinations. You must pass the Year 1 theory examinations before starting on the year 2 course.
Level 4 Diploma for Optical Technicians FBDO Fast-track
If you are a qualified Dispensing Optician, you can also obtain the SMC(Tech) qualification. Having completed the Dispensing Opticians course, you will be exempt from the first year of the course, and will only need to complete units 5, 6 and 11 of the theory examinations and only half of the practical examination.
The course will take around 6 months to complete, and you should allow 4 to 5 hours a week for study. You will need access to facilities for glazing.
